I have recently published my latest book, "How To Create A Chic & Cozy Winter," along with a few others these last few months and so I understand the dedication and patience that is required to put your book(s) out in the world. Despite my full schedule, I try to bring attention to some wonderful books I've recently read that left a lasting impression upon me. Each review is critical for authors and so I consider the reviews I write a small contribution in affirming all the hard work they do. I cannot review every book out there, but my heart is content that I can do something meaningful for these inspiring writers.

French Chic Wherever You Are: Petite lessons in French diet, staying slim, beauty, Parisian style, charm, elegance & mystique to embrace your inner Frenchness anywhere in the world by Caroline Dion

What a lovely, cozy book written by author, Caroline Dion.

This book brought me a wonderful sense of calm while reading it. Her down-to-earth writing style made me feel as though I was conversing with a long-time friend. I especially liked her simplistic advice on living life the "Parisian" way. Her "petite lessons" set goals that are attainable in everyday life. For example, her advice to utilize "portion control" as opposed to starving oneself is sensible and much more easier to implement than to try and eat in drastic moderation for the sake of attaining one's inner health and aesthetic goals.

Her advice is... balanced. She stresses you are not required to have a huge wallet to live a chic, "Parisian" lifestyle. The chapters are short yet full of information. I deem this book a "feel good" book as it kindly encourages the reader to attain their goals without making the reader feel like success is unattainable.

Truly inspiring! I do recommend picking up a copy in whatever format you desire.

Elevate Your Money Mindset: Approach Your Finances With Positivity, Confidence and Enthusiasm (Elevated Living Book 5) by Jennifer Melville

I like pretty things... and they cost money.
There.
I said it.

This book is a little gem for helping you set priorities with your finances and maintaining long-standing, personal, money management. I like the way the author wrote about her own personal experiences/scenarios as examples that brought a pleasant, down-to-earth quality to her book which connected with me as a reader. The author's ideas are straight-forward and easy to implement as she heavily emphasized calls-to-action and lists to ensure her readers are on track with their money management goals in a targeted manner. I would advise making your own personal notes after reading each chapter. I particularly liked the chapters on creating a viable budget and avoiding temptation. As an accountant, the author is chalk full of ingenious ideas to help you reach your financial goals.

In summation, this book is very helpful when it comes to managing your funds in an attainable way that brings success to your finances. I purchased a paperback copy which will make it easy for me to jump back to review certain chapters if the need arises.

Great book. An earnest effort on the author's part.

Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu

Oh. My. Goodness.

This book had all my senses screaming at me at the same time. I was shaken, stirred, fascinated, horrified...

Every line I read built into something intangible that left me anticipating each scene, unable to tear my eyes away from the page. Le Fanu had a distinct way of describing a scene in such great detail, I was completing lost when reading the book. The sweet, yet dark, poignant energy that is Carmilla had me entranced, horrified, confused... The last time I was besotted like this with the written word was with Elizabeth Von Arnim's "The Enchanted April." Le Fanu writes with the same depth of detail that fleshes out his characters so thoroughly, I forget I am reading a book, so lost I am in the realistic depiction of the story.

Take for instance this quote:

“Over the sward and low grounds a thin film of mist was stealing like smoke, marking the distances with a transparent veil; and here and there we could see the river faintly flashing in the moonlight.”

It made me shiver... anticipate that something fearful was on the horizon.

The energy conveyed here is robust... palpable:

"In these mysterious moods I did not like her. I experienced a strange tumultuous excitement that was pleasurable, ever and anon, mingled with a vague sense of fear and disgust. I had no distinct thoughts about her while such scenes lasted, but I was conscious of a love growing into adoration, and also of abhorrence. This I know is paradox, but I can make no other attempt to explain the feeling."

Le Fanu's writing is superb, in my humble opinion. I felt the anguish, the fear, the urgency... all of it wrapped up in scenes so thoroughly described, I feel like I walked in the horrific world of Carmilla... the vampire before Dracula...

The only qualm I have is that I wish this book was not a short read. I won't go into too much detail so as not to spoil it for another potential reader.

This deserves no less than 5/5. I have NO REGRETS reading this book.

The Women of Rothschild: The Untold Story of the World's Most Famous Dynasty by Natalie Livingstone

This book carries a detailed plethora of information regarding the Rothschild women and as such, it came across as an encyclopedia. I appreciate the knowledge I consumed reading this book as I had a vague familiarity with the women of Rothschild or the Rothchilds as a whole as all I knew was that they were a wealthy dynasty. This book uncovers the essential, influential roles of the females within the Rothchild clan. They were an instrumental powerhouse, albeit delegated to the background, living in their husbands' shadows when in fact, they were much more than that. Sadly, their contributions have been overlooked throughout history yet this book sheds a truthful light on the reality of the life that unfolded for these Rothschild women.

In addition, I do appreciate the meticulous research that was required to create a detailed book to this extent, spanning a few hundred years. It is not a light read as the information consumed is abundant. I do recommend reading it for a history buff or anyone wanting to learn about the Rothschild women in detail.

Victorian Murderesses by Debbie Blake

My goodness!
This book is absolutely intriguing! My mouth fell open quite a few times while reading it. I could not believe these women were, in my opinion, hell unleashed on earth. Yes, all their stories were shocking but what made it utterly horrific was the fact that you were very aware that THESE STORIES WERE ALL TRUE! Not fictional! I think I got a few white hairs because of it. They sliced and diced and poisoned as if it was a normal, everyday occurrence and what left me most horrified was that some of them murdered little babies and children without so much as blink of the eye. They were determined to get what they wanted and did not care about who stood in their way. I was very disturbed by this but somehow, I could not stop reading the book. I entered a realm that I never do in my reading world. I am glad I read this book as it opened my eyes to horror of what people can do without any remorse.

This was a fantastic read right before Hallowe'en. It's up there with "Carmilla" which I recently read and reviewed. The writing and tone and true stories all worked together in unison.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC! I HIGHLY recommend "Victorian Murderesses." This book has an anticipated release date of October 30, 2022.

Words of Weight by Mary Grace van der Kroef

The beautiful energy conveyed in Mary Grace van der Kroef's first book, "The Branch That I Am," is played out once again in her fabulous, new poetry book, "Words of Weight." It is a short, yet highly satisfying read which leaves your thoughts floating, as if on a cloud.

Mary's command of words is astonishingly beautiful. Such woven lines as "lingering as perfume on skin despite distance," and "repeating a truth that was taught in love even when sitting alone" are prime examples of the author's supreme writing skills.

Each poem is skillfully articulated in a way to subtly draw the reader into the world she is creating. You are there- a participant in her poems... feeling and imagining and reacting. The reading process is so divinely human... it leaves you breathless. Up to the very last page I floated in thoughts, elevated beyond reading mere words.

This is a wonderful book, written by a skilled poet. With great anticipation, I await Mary's new release. If you appreciate beautiful writing, do not hesitate to obtain a copy of this little gem.

The Vampyre: With 12 Illustrations and a Free Audio Link by John William Polidori

I appreciate this short, gothic story written in 1819 by John William Polidori. I find; however, that it did not thrill me like Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's "Carmilla." (I could barely contain my excitement writing that review). The latter is still juicy and vivid in my mind, much like other great reads such as "The Picture of Dorian Gray."

My mind wandered a bit while reading "The Vampyre." It just did not hook me in. I am even hesitant to write that as I did so expect it to entrance me like "Carmilla" did. The writing is strong, but a sizzling air of suspense did not come through for me. It does not mean it would not be fully appreciated by another reader. I knocked off one star for the above-noted. It is still a classic worth reading.

Not Without My Mother's Boots: A Ukrainian Farmer's Memoir (Paperback)
by Nicholas Chrustie & edited by Brenda Christie.

Oh my goodness! I have so much to say but my emotions are unable to stop clinging to each other long enough for me to put into words a sensible review. Here it goes...

"Not Without My Mother's Boots: A Ukrainian Farmer's Memoir" is a powerful, true story that worked its way into my heart. The hardship Nicholas Christie endured. I actually started crying reading this paragraph in the book:

"In the mornings there was heavy dew on the ground, so, I had to keep busy to keep warm for I didn’t have shoes. After a few days, my feet got chapped and sore, and started bleeding. They were worse around the ankles. When the foreman saw my feet, he promised we wouldn’t have pasture the cows on the stubble anymore. The boy with me, told me to wet my feet in urine, which I did, and nearly died with pain. I was jumping around like crazy; it was burning like fire."

This book reminded me that anything I believe is a "hardship" in this present age is nothing compared to what Nicholas endured on a daily basis. Everyday life was transformed into constant striving, day in - day out, without the creature comforts we take for granted.

It is beautifully written in a factual manner that somehow brings the reader closer to the message in the book. Poverty, depression, hunger, physical and mental endurance... these experiences were all too vividly real for Nicholas Chrustie... and this made this book even more poignant and difficult to process. Nicholas Chrustie was the salt of the earth- hardworking in a harsh world, striving to do his very best in all things, despite his unpleasant circumstances.

This book is a must read. A golden little gem of a book that you may possibly never forget.

Flowers with Southern Lady by Cindy Cooper

The photos in this book are quite lovely. The floral arrangements seem to burst from the pages, filing the eyes with color, delicate shapes and overall glamour. The book is also very well put together on all fronts. The cover, interior layout and fonts are all on point. I was looking for a picturesque book I could take in amidst a quiet, cozy setting and it did not disappoint.

Welcome to my newly vamped Book Reviews page wherein I will be posting my review of the books I have read during each season. This makes it much easier for me as posting each review on its own was time-consuming and hindered me from uploading reviews in a consistent, timely fashion. From time to time, as my schedule allows, I am hoping to post some new book release information regarding books I personally deem worthy of special attention. It brings me great pleasure to read and write reviews and so I do not wish to curtail that due to my own writing goals. I post my reviews on Goodreads, Amazon, Instagram, TikTok and when applicable, to NetGalley.

I hope you enjoy this gallery of my summarized book reviews for summer 2022. This month (September), I already dove into some wonderful books and will be posting those current reviews on all my social media communications as noted above but will post them on this page in a gallery alongside the other books I read in autumn.

SUMMER 2022 BOOK REVIEWS

Title: In Too Steep (Fiction)
Author: Kate Kingsbury

I truly enjoyed reading "In Too Steep" written by Kate Kingsbury. It was my first encounter with this author and I was certainly not disappointed.

The book cover is truly lovely and first attracted me to the book. It matched the contents within satisfactorily.

Ms. Kingsbury is a strong writer with a wonderful ability to create a cozy, deeply engaging setting that draws the reader in. The atmosphere was warm, inviting ad the relationship depicted between the ladies was heartfelt and genuine. The characters were amply fleshed out, contributing to the overall cozy effect.

I think I gained an extra five pounds just reading about the succulent desserts, sandwiches and teas the author described in significant detail.

In summation, the story was even-paced and flowed beautifully from one scene to the next which made for a pleasurable read. It was not an effort to read this book.

Thank you to NetGalley, Crooked Lane Books and Kate Kingsbury for the opportunity to read an advanced reader copy of this delightful book. It is scheduled to be released on August 9, 2022 and I am sure it will not disappoint.

Title: The Branch That I Am (Poetry)
Author: Mary Grave van der Kroef

I feel as though my thoughts and the skin that surrounds my flesh have been carefully peeled away to reveal my inner core and all it's hidden truths. This is the raw effect that is created through reading Mary Grace van der Kroef's deeply moving poetry book, "The Branch That I am." Her writing is a branch, indeed, that triggers your emotions and makes you question the purpose of your own, personal journey in life.

Mary's poetic verses are authentic and deeply engaging in their stark simplicity. I felt both uplifted and somehow gratified reading her work as her writing is detailed and visionary in the way she expounds on faith, a prevalent theme in the book. As we wander through life, our thoughts may become heavier, we endure more life experiences that accumulate and change us and this is an excellent book to read that is very much on par with our inner growth.

Mary's writing flowed beautifully and I am humbled to have experienced her work. Her thought processes crafted a poetry book that can easily connect with readers on a sentimental, meaningful level.

Well done!

Title: Seashells In My Pocket (Non-fiction)
Author: Jennifer Melville

If you are looking for a very light, relaxing summer read then this is the book for you. The chapters are short and the book is a quick read. It has a nice, "beachy" tone to it, just as promised by the author. It was a great read in bed as the summery descriptions lulled me into a calm state before bed time which was wonderful. I am from Canada, too, and I have always wanted to travel to the east coast to experience its raw beauty. This book reminded me to make my travel wish a reality. I enjoyed this book and I do recommend you picking up a copy for your relaxing, summer beach read.

Author: Jennifer Melville

This poetry compilation will illuminate your thoughts and the dark spaces within your heart. Beautifully written, each poem speaks to you, dives into your senses and draws out your emotions in ways that stay with you, long after you read the final page. The poet's writing is deep, sensual, raw and unforgiving, transporting your own soul on a wave of thoughtfulness. Her writing... it stays with you. That is her innate power as a poet. To make you think. To make you feel. To leave a mark. I enjoyed every one of her poems. "Love Quivers" and "She Was Home" amongst many others found a permanent home within my heart. Title: Less Is More (Non-Fiction)
Author: Kristi Belle

Was looking for something like this to read while sipping lemonade in the garden. It fit the bill. The writer's tone was personal, as if in a jovial conversation. She expounded on a few simple ideas which I jotted down after reading as I noted I can implement them in my own life. New ideas that make day-to-day life "better" are always welcome. A very quick, easy-peasy read.

Title: Paris In My Panties (Non-Ficion)
Author: Jennifer Melville

That title, "Paris In My Panties,' in conjunction with my previous experience reading Jennifer Melville's chic, inspiring books, propelled me to read her latest work. And... I was not disappointed. What a delight this book turned out to be. I immersed myself in the dreamy world of Paris as depicted by the author's detailed descriptions and personal renditions of her own experiences. Such a pleasant read, I felt uplifted while reading this book which is something I look for when I read a book during my much cherished quiet time. I am looking forward to reading more books from this inspiring author. I recommend this chic, lovely book to any reader looking for a pleasant read.

Title: The City Wife (Fiction)
Author: R.M. Carpus

From beginning to end, this riveting novel by R.M. Carpus was a delightful page-turner. The plot flowed from paragraph to paragraph and the characters were amply fleshed out, drawing the reader into the storyline. The bond between mother and daughter is a tangible thing and as such, the reader is vested in their relationship and its ensuing journey. It carries the story beautifully, subtly, in a most natural fashion. There is no straining to find depth within the characters by the reader.

It is pertinent to note that the author's writing style is authentic, vivid in its delivery. Take for instance this line that is laced with striking imagery: "Vibrations spread from the ground up, rattling my teeth. Behind me I heard books jumping from their shelves, and crashing glass evoked a string of screams across the pitch-black space." This plethora of words that paint moving pictures is witnessed throughout the book. The author's writing almost borders on being poetic. There is this elegant flair that elevates her work... a unique style that has the unique potential to stand out from other books in this genre. The cover is simply beautiful and elegant.

The book ends and the reader is left wanting more. There is anticipation. It is an ominous, yet gentle ending that sets the stage for the next book. Dramatic and yet subtle. Perfectly executed.

This is a wonderful debut novel from this author, leaving the reader anticipating a second book.

Title: Dispatches From The Gilded Age: A Few More Thoughts on Interesting People, Far-Flung Places, and the Joys of Southern Comforts (Non-Fiction)
Author: Julia Reed / Editor: Everett Bexley

What a plethora of carefully curated information that made for a solid, entertaining read. My thoughts were taken on a historical journey from chapter to chapter, never knowing what to expect, thereby heightening my anticipation. Julia Reed was a keen writer, endowed with a mind that is akin to a focal lens that took a snapshot of a current situation and expounded upon it in minute detail. I actually heard myself expressing my own commentary to her writings. She had me fully engaged.

I particularly enjoyed the chapters on fashion, beauty and food and was riveted by the chapter about Sister Helen Prejean. Some chapters were lighthearted and some were more serious in tone. But, you are guaranteed that each chapter is brimming with detailed information.

In summation, this was a lovely, light read I found highly entertaining. You will have to pick up a copy of this book and dive into it for yourself.

Title: Skirts: Fashioning Modern Femininity In The Twentieth Century (Non-Fiction)
Author: Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell

When I first saw the title of this book my eyes widened in wonder and I thought: "no way... there is no way an author can write an entire 272 page book about... skirts!" And so... my interest was piqued.

Oh my goodness! Wow... I was wrong. The author wrote a very thorough book about the role "skirts/dresses" have played in the twentieth century within a social and fashion-historical context. It is very clear that Chrisman-Campbell has thoroughly researched her subject. I liked her clean, matter-of-fact tone which was not bogged down by superfluous wording. It let her research shine and got her message across to the reader.

From era to era, "skirts" have prevailed, influenced and paved the way of fashion and stood the test of time, evolving and adapting in an effort to stay relevant. One of my personal favorite is the section on Coco Chanel. For me, she was an incomparable fashion influencer, as was her iconic little black dress which never faltered in its popularity to this day. The section about the "tennis dress" was an entire movement that could have had its own book. My "oh wow" senses kicked in during that discussion. To be honest, each chapter was fascinating as it was enjoyable to read about past celebrities/influencers as pertaining to their context with skirts/dresses.

I found this book to be thoroughly detailed in its execution, a "smart" book endowed with a plethora or facts that made for an entertaining read. You will have to pick up a copy to learn of all the juicy details.

Book Review: "The Master of Emmet Manor." Author: Joe Giampaolo. Publisher: Independently Published. Publication Date: May 1, 2022

"The Master of Emmet Manor" is the third installment in "The Hampshire Stories" series and like the previous books, this one did not disappoint. The storyline progressively evolves and most importantly, the characters are amply fleshed out, immersing the reader within the story through their robust dialogues and musings. Although this is a short book lengthwise, it is epic in its overall delivery.

Rich in vivid detail and imagery, Mr. Giampaolo paints a regency romance that I can honestly say it reads like a Jane Austen novel. His knowledge of historical details during that time period is monumental but what strikes me even more while reading this book is the elegant, and yet humble way, he expounds that knowledge, ensuring that the story unfolds in a natural, uncontrived manner. Needless to say, there is a certain "smartness" about this book that is impressive to a reader experienced in reading this particular genre.

Mr. Giampaolo furtherly showcases his keen skills as an author with the addition of beautifully written poetry within this book, baptizing it with this original element that naturally weaves into the storyline, rendering the book a few notches above some of the other regency books I have read in the past. The poetry's delivery is soft, flowy and ultimately romantic in it's undertone. A lovely treat for the reader. The quality of style in Mr. Giampaolo's writing is exactly that... quality... brimming with gracefulness and elegance and he delivers this carefully crafted concoction throughout every book he publishes.

I fell irrevocably in love with the elegant cover and the love affair continued with each turn of the page. I appreciate this latest, written work of art from the author. In summation, this book is exceptionally written and worth being added to your personal bookshelf.

"The Master of Emmet Manor" deserves no less than 5/5.

Hope. We need hope and self-empowerment and courage like never before. We are suspended in an era where global unrest and a viral threat to our health jeopardizes our inner peace and our connection with the world. The quest for inner peace is an ongoing one as is our need to be the best version of ourselves that contributes to society without extinguishing our own purpose in life and our own goals and beliefs.

"Maya Angelou's Quotes of Wisdom & Hope: Life-Changing Lessons To Inspire, Empower, and Encourage You" encapsulates words that uplift and feed the human mind with raw positivity. Her words are a beacon of hope, a guiding light for humanity from all walks of life.

How can anyone not be riveted by Ms. Angelou's quote:

"my mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style."

Other notable quotes are:

"Open your eyes to the beauty around you, open your mind to the wonders of life, open your heart to those who love you, and always be true to yourself."

"You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off you."

These are inspiring words every single human being benefits from being exposed to for as we move forward throughout our 'life journey,' we can lose our way, lose hope, lose confidence, feel burdened, feel stressed, forget our roots; et al. The afflictions that may plague us from being our best, most courageous and compassionate selves are overturned or at the very least, slowly eroded by reading Ms. Angelou's thought-provoking words.

This book is well organized and the reading experience is seamless with no formatting hiccups. This makes for a pleasant read. I can report to you that this compilation is definitely an inspiring, uplifting book to read. The wisdom that is emitted from her writing is a tangible thing that can be incorporated in one's own everyday life. The life lessons are priceless as they are timeless. I rate this book a 5/5.

Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press and Laura Thompson for the opportunity to read and review an e-galley copy of "Heiresses: The Lives of the Million Dollar Babies."

Well... I must say... I had my fill of scandals and drama as I journeyed through this book. It is teeming with a plethora of information that showcases the writer's ability to artfully report her research findings in intricate detail. It is a sweeping saga about heiresses and their personal experiences that unfolds decades after decades, giving the reader an intimate, birds-eye view of their gilded, yet oftentimes, lackluster worlds.

Though at times the issues plaguing the heiresses are serious in nature, the author's delivery of said information is almost playful and gossipy at times and therefore entertaining for the reader. I found myself thinking of such television shows as the original version of "Gossip Girl," sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the next "omg" moment to hit me between my eyes. Indeed... there were many scenarios these women endured that left me shaking my head in wonder. Vilified, sold, stolen, bartered, raped, held captive, rendered insane, beaten, hidden, "enveloped in money" but without a shred of rights or dignity, stripped of decision-making or access to their own inherited funds... these "true stories" are horrific in nature to say the least.

My thoughts veered to Tina Turner's famous song, "What's Love Got To Do With It?" as it kept entering my mind as I turned page after page, reading all the drama that ensued for these "heiresses." Where was the love? Sadly, it most often had nothing to do with these relationships. These were business alliances, get-rich-quick for the groom schemes, relationships that favored the males and put a noose around the females' neck. Rich in money and assets... yet poor in respect and genuine love. How awful it must have been to be wanted only for what you can "deliver," for being chosen for the attractive "loot" you can bring into a relationship. My thoughts were churning with a smorgasbord of questions while reading this book and so it is clearly a thought-provoking compilation that connects with the reader.

We are also introduced to females who thrived as heiresses. This was a relief to read. The struggle to "be" figured prominently for these heiresses.

In summation, I enjoyed this book. The information was rich, detailed and carried a playful tone to it as clearly, the reader can note that the writer, too, was probably rolling her eyes as she assembled the information for this book.

I recommend this book for your reading pleasure.

Thank you to NetGalley, Sweet Lemon Press LLC and Ellie Alexander for the opportunity to read and review an Advanced Reader Copy of "Lost Coast Literary" expected to be released on March 29, 2022.

This book is a perfect blend of reality and magic that captivates the reader with every turn of the page. The first question that entered my mind when I commenced reading the book was: "is it possible that another author's writing style from a different era can be reincarnated in a modern-day author's work?" I truly believe this is possible for after reading the carefully etched, deliberate descriptions in Ms. Alexander's book, I immediately compared her to another engaging author that had a rare gift in bringing a story to life in vivid detail: Elizabeth Von Arnim (1866-1941). Ironically, a few weeks ago I read Ms. Arnim's book, "The Enchanted April," written in the ripe old year of 1922... a book which still resonates today with countless readers across the globe because of the exquisite details she masterfully pens that paint moving pictures within the reader's mind.

And this is the exact writing gift that Ms. Alexander portrays in her own writing. Her every word is a brush stroke, shifting the story from a mere book to a cinematographic vision etched in ink. The reader does not have to strain to envision what the author is trying to convey; the author does the work for you and so it invokes a pleasant, effortless read.

Vivid descriptions contain the keys that open up the portal of the reader's mind that harbors imagination. We can witness this in this book. Emily's anguish in trying to carve her future, her love of all things literary which pulls her in every direction and is the epicenter driving her decisions, and her past and current family issues are palpable- the reader feels her dilemma through her countless self-analysis and never-ending questions. She feels abandoned by her extended family and is drowning in unanswered questions, carrying the weight of her uncertainty and lack of answers throughout her life. Her emotions are heightened. Strained. All these issues are now together, at the forefront of her thoughts and she must confront them. She is at a crossroads- somewhere she does not want to be and this is expertly illustrated through Ms. Alexander's sweeping, yet controlled, descriptions. We got inside Emily's head.

We witness this gift of writing in vivid detail with the fantastic descriptions of "The Ballard" - the 'literary' mansion Ellie inherits from her grandmother and the paint-stroke, finely executed details of the village and it's community inhabitants. These details 'connect' the reader to the unfolding story. Without this, the reader loses interest in the characters and storyline and does not remain vested in the story to read it to the end. This does not happen here. Ms. Alexander masterfully keeps her reader connected.

The "magical" element was a pleasant, refreshing twist to the story. I was able to guess ahead of time what the outcome would be as the story unfolded but the author's writing kept me hooked. The plot was evenly paced and flowed in time to the tone which was pleasant and blended with the descriptions.

In summation, "Lost Coast Literary" was a cozy read and I stayed immersed in the story. I would be delighted to read Ms. Alexander's previous literary works and future ARCs. I do recommend this book be added to your TBR list. All opinions in this review are my own.

Before I spill the contents of my thoughts regarding this book, kindly note I received an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review of "The Crystal Beads, Lalka's Journey."

I am not sure where to begin... My emotions are deeply touched by this poignant story wherein a Jewish mother had no choice but to leave her young daughter at a Catholic church during the Holocaust in order to protect her. The mother's dialogue with her daughter was gentle, heart-wrenching and I instantly knew this "game" she was trying to play with her daughter in order to lessen the blow of their imminent separation was setting me up for tears that would eventually silently spill from the corners of my eyes. It is so very clear the mother-daughter separation was a bittersweet moment for them both.

I think a deeply powerful scene that poked holes in my heart was when little Lalka was kneeling on the ground and praying with her beads, clutching them to her as if they were a lifeline to protect her from her harrowing experience with the Nazis. It is deeply disturbing to see what hate can do to another human being, instilling such anguish that it becomes pain personified, a palpable thing. Empathy for others and resilience against the face of someone wishing to do you arm with their hate is taught here with a gentle, yet matter-of-fact hand, by the author.

The illustrations within the book are a wonder to behold. The colors are muted and soft, pillow-like in their application as are the drawings and yet they are powerful at that same time. Skill and a deep understanding of the sensitive subject is conveyed here in superb balance. The expressions of the characters reflect a wealth of emotions that are brimming with heartfelt sentiment. Overall, the illustrations and the writing perfectly support one another in their respective parts in conveying the story's message quite beautifully. There is a certain kind of soft elegance within the book that speaks volumes and brings its point across without any harshness in its delivery. The author brilliantly ends the story with a question from Lalka that is heavy with wisdom, leaving room for other discussions to ensue with children and/or adults long after the book is closed.

This book is an instant, timeless classic that would appeal to young and adult readers alike. Kindly note this book is available for purchase on June 14, 2022 on a plethora of platforms. I highly recommend this book for it's educational purpose and for the overall story that will steal your heart and run away with it.

Book Review: "The Enchanted April;" Author: Elizabeth Von Arnim; written in 1922

Enchanting! Mesmerizing! Ultimately... spellbinding!

How else can one describe the written wonder that is "The Enchanted April," a classic novel written by the incomparable Elizabeth von Arnim in 1922, a novel that still has the ability to capture a reader's senses so fully it becomes an instant, never-to-be-forgotten, lifelong favorite for many readers several decades after being published!

The characters, dialogue, setting and plot within this book are so equally well-developed they weave a mosaic of finely-knit ingredients that create the perfect recipe to formulate a stellar novel. The characters are revealed like paint being chipped from a wall, a bit at a time, unveiling so much of the brewings within their mind and actions you cannot help but be transfixed.

Take for instance this revealing line:

"How passionately she longed to be important to somebody again—not important on platforms, not important as an asset in an organization, but privately important, just to one other person, quite privately, nobody else to know or notice. It didn't seem much to ask in a world so crowded with people, just to have one of them, only one out of all the millions, to oneself. Somebody who needed one, who thought of one, who was eager to come to one—oh, oh how dreadfully one wanted to be precious!"

A flurry of emotions wanting to break free is evident here. And this is just a minute example of the descriptive reflections portrayed from each character. No one character and their thoughts are left mysterious in this book. There is a sweet, poignant longing to fully live life and love and be loved with all their hearts by the ladies in this book. Their emotions are palpable, splattered on the page for you to revel in with every turn of the page. Whatever the characters were experiencing in their lives and the dreams and hopes they aspired to- I felt it... all of it.

In addition, this quoted line conveys a classic connotation in that it can easily fit into today's society. It is indeed timeless. Anyone of us can feel like this at any time within our lives- longing to be "privately important"- not for the "mechanical" asset we can bring to an organization or platform but what we can bring of our true selves in authentic relationships we keep near and dear to our hearts in humble privacy.

Another line strikes a poignant chord:

"Why couldn't two unhappy people refresh each other on their way through this dusty business of life by a little talk—real, natural talk, about what they felt, what they would have liked, what they still tried to hope?"

The setting was magical, so tangibly alive I could actually feel the soft breeze caress my own cheeks and imagine the scent of flowers and sea that lingered in the air. The vivid scenes permeated my own senses. This descriptive paragraph says it all:

"The ripples of the sea made little gurgling noises at their feet. They screwed up their eyes to be able to look into the blaze of light beyond the shade of their tree. The hot smell from the pine-needles and from the cushions of wild thyme that padded the spaces between the rocks, and sometimes a smell of pure honey from a clump of warm irises up behind them in the sun, puffed across their faces. Very soon Mrs. Wilkins took her shoes and stockings off, and let her feet hang in the water. After watching her a minute Mrs. Arbuthnot did the same. Their happiness was then complete."

My heart was elated... my soul was transported to that beautiful vacation spot skillfully depicted by the author. I felt like I was right there in Italy, in a world teeming with visual beauty, color and a hearty abundance of hope. A world where dreams can turn into reality just by sight and breathing in the air. This is magic skillfully, yet naturally, etched by the author. Words flowed into cinematic scenes that unraveled within the mind. The spot-on extent of this writing perfection is rare. Incomparable.

There is no doubt... I am gushing for I was quite simply and irrevocably... "enchanted."

"The Reader's Companion To The Hampshire Stories Series- Illustrated;" Author & Publisher: Joe Giampaolo; Publication Date: January 5, 2022

As an avid reader and book reviewer, you long for a creative piece of work to come across your desk and meet your list of carefully cultivated expectations. Once in a while, it all comes together... a writer will pay special attention in the execution of their written words and in the final presentation of their book and delight you enough that you wish to add the book to your forever-favorite, five-star bookshelf. Well, it happened now with author, Joe Giampaolo's, smartly executed new book, "The Reader's Companion To the Hampshire Stories Series- Illustrated," published on January 5, 2022.

Delighted. Pleased. Satisfied. These are but a few words to relay to you my experience reading this book described as a "concise guide to the history, traditions and literature of 19th-century England." (Taken from the back cover description of the book).

The written information within this book is rich in detail, a true "companion" to Mr. Giampaolo's "Hampshire Stories Series." I have read both previous books in the series: "Hampshire Stories: A Collection of Tales Set in 19th-century England (The Hampshire Stories Series) and "The Farmer's Daughter: A Regency Romance (The Hampshire Stories Series)," so I can convey that "The Reader's Companion..." is a perfect accompaniment to the series. I particularly enjoyed learning the meaning of words I never heard of such as 'redingote' and 'burnous' and being privy to other informative tidbits from that era that rendered me much more educated.

This book serves as a desirous read for both a writer and a reader as:

1.) it serves as a plethora of information a writer can refer to when researching their own book set in the 19th-century. It is that detailed and accurate in its rendition; and,
2.) it serves as an informative book for the average reader who simply wishes to be casually entertained with the history and traditions of the 19th-century.

I found myself delighted by the section of the book paying homage to all the wonderful writers that came out of that time period. It makes for a wonderful reference list of authors.

I read the e-book and paperback versions of this book. My interest was held reading it twice. I was privy to both experiences and I can honestly convey to you that whichever version you may choose to obtain, I enjoyed the book. If, however, you are a reader who prefers or appreciates colored pictures in a book, then the paperback version is for you. I am very glad I have a copy of the paperback version. Such diligent care and accuracy is depicted in this book I can only describe the final result as a masterpiece... exquisite... with special attention paid to visual details. The photos, the descriptions and references, the neatly laid out Table of Contents and ultimately, the formatting of the book as a whole is spot on, conveying nothing but a professionalism that is yearned for by a discerning reader.

As this book riveted all my senses with its well-rounded execution, I can convey it deserves a 5/5 grading and nothing less.
